One paycheck away…
As promised, here’s a link to the Dr. Drew Lifechangers episode I worked on a few weeks back. I had the pleasure of working with a woman named Carolee who was literally living in her car in Phoenix in 100+ degree heat. While I’ve had my fair share of trailer park experiences, I’m a bit ashamed to say I was expecting to meet someone who I couldn’t identify with or relate to. I was waiting in a car for Carolee and the film crew to pull into the WalMart parking lot (where she lives) and watched as a white minivan pulled up – driven by a woman who, I would have bet my bottom dollar, was any other mom doing some shopping – only to realize this is the homeless woman I would be working with. I have the national unemployment numbers in my face on a regular basis, but for the first time it really hit me how many talented, intelligent, personable people are one paycheck away from living in their car. Carolee and I talked about a lot of during our time together and I was so struck by the fact that as women (not sure if this is true about men) a lot of us live with this deep-seated fear that we’ll be the shopping bag lady. The good news is by virtue of her willingness to reach out, as well as Dr. Drew’s generosity to rally the troops to support her, Carolee’s life has been turned around. I hope you enjoy.
